RIM Playbook: For patriots or vultures?

Danica with the Playbook, using wi-fi at the Mr. Pide Restaurant on the Danforth
The 32GB Blackberry Playbook is selling now at Staples for $149. [Introduced at $599, quickly reduced to $299] It is an end-of-line product but I think we might still get 3 year’s use out of the new one I just bought. It surfs the web with wifi and shoots HD video. That alone is worth the price. Anything else is gravy.
And there will be quite a bit of “else”, I think. For one thing, it can connect to Ubuntu Linux, which is one of my new enthusiasms. For another, YouTube tutorials show ways to get Android apps to run on Playbooks… and there are thousands of those. Playbook itself has enough apps for me, probably. The size is handy, too. Smaller and lighter than an iPad, it is serviceably larger than an iPod Touch.
Very well made and elegantly styled, the Playbook has the look and feel of quality. As a Canuck, I want very much to see RIM survive, so I’m rooting for the company with my purchase, even though RIM won’t make any money on the sale.
I shall report on my new toy as I become more familiar with it. I’m already delighted with it and it’s barely out of the box.

We love Turkish pide (pee-duh) which is sort of like pizza but with a crust we prefer. There are many toppings to choose from. Today, we went for one egg & Turkish sausage and one feta cheese & spinach. Yummy and filling.

  1. I see online ads for new Playbooks priced at $130 but I’m glad I grabbed one at Staples. They probably won’t be around for long. Best Buy sells them for $149, too.
