Brian phoned up with a mystery offer. He would pick us up and whisk us away for a 3 hour excursion to an undisclosed cultural event. Brian went to the Picasso exhibit with us recently. He assured us that his event would be quite different from that one.

More pictures after the break.
Goodwood Kartways was hosting an afternoon of amateur races for age groups ranging from preteens to over-35 oldsters. One of the competitors was Elvis Stoyko, the skater. Brian shook hands with him and learned that Elvis is a relatively recent enthusiast for the sport. Elvis didn’t win his race but he beat 9 other racers in a field of 32.
We spent a little more than an hour watching laps, eating hotdogs and snapping pictures. The atmosphere is easygoing and fun but the competitors are very serious about their machines. Major, major money is poured into the gear.

Brian will be on the track himself tomorrow, not racing against today’s world champions but having a pretty gruelling workout, nevertheless. These karts really move and give drivers a good pounding. Rib guards are a must, not just crash helmets. Of course the speed sensation is extreme, because racers’ butts are inches from the ground.
Thanks for a fun surprise, Brian!
