Carving up the virtual pie

goopleWhen I read that Google and Apple had agreed to stop suing each other over certain patent issues, I was reminded of how similar our virtual world is to our geopolitical one.
Companies are like countries, but the major forces are the alliances. Apple and Google are on the “same side” in many ways. Rivals are in Asia.
How privileged I feel, to have seen the internet in it’s innocent infancy when any act of commerce was swiftly condemned.

  1. Whatever Apple is now, it’s not the computer company I once loved. It’s not just present management’s fault. Steve Jobs set the pattern before he died. Apple’s “walled garden” operating systems are more like gated communities … unpleasantly restrictive and authoritative. The “We know what’s best for you” attitude is ironic, considering the iconic anti-Big Brother commercial that branded Apple in the 80s.
Today’s Think Different crazy ones are on Linux boxes, not iThings.
