Why read someone else's news?

newspaper
Local “ethnic” newspapers can be very informative, even if the stories have no personal impact. I like to be reminded that our celebrities are completely interchangeable with other beautiful people I’ve never heard of. Far away politics, sporting events and love affairs are pleasantly remote and remind me that similar Canadian concerns are just as fleeting, just as obscure to most of the world.
I like to compare the relative numbers of stories from “back home” with those based in Canada. It gives me a sense of the target audience’s feeling of belonging here. Stories offering tips on how to adapt and get to know the neighbours are particularly useful, because they show me some of the difficulties newcomers face. I might learn how to help a bit, to be more friendly and welcoming.
It helps to know a little about where the other guy is coming from, and a peek into his newspaper can be a little part of that.
