Following part of the Toronto PATH

When windchill drops the temperature to 30 below, joining the moles in the underground PATH makes a lot of sense. My friend Bill and I met for lunch at Front and Queen, then descended.

We started from the Galleria in Brookfield Place.

According to Guinness World Records, PATH is the largest underground shopping complex with 30 km (19 miles) of shopping arcades.


Neither Bill is really a hockey fan, but the Hall of Fame is right there. so …

Ken Danby admirers will recognize the sculpture as a 3D rendition of that famous Goalie picture.
We went south to Union Station, which is under major renovation that will continue for another couple of years. The main hall looks untouched, though.

Odd that the underground PATH would feature a Skywalk, but there it is, crossing the railway tracks.

Many of the Skywalk windows are covered with hoardings, painted with optimistic messages about the 2015 Pan Am Games and a coming rail link to the airport. Behind the hoardings, construction chugs along slowly. Could be fantastic when it’s ready.

“It’s like a different city down here,” Bill said, observing all of the glass and aluminum condos springing up. “Sort of a Bladerunner feel”.

We headed back north, through the throngs of jacketless office workers who mill about in the food courts and retail corridors of the PATH. By Dundas we’d have enough and boarded the subway for home.
