Runt rocks at the Flying Pony

My hat’s off to Al Runt, “That Lee’s Palace Guy“. He’s been on the Toronto art scene since the 60s, working (and working and working!) as an artist and, when necessary, paying his bills by turning his brush to painting houses, walls, whatever.
Runt’s a survivor. His counter-culture style is distinctive and has remained remarkably consistent over the decades. The work reminds me of the hippie era from which he emerged. Psychedelic colours, Robert Crumb-like irreverence, or early Matt Groening. As an “outsider” artist he reminds me, too, of the much-loved Mendelson Joe. He’s direct, unbridled, prolific and earthy. Also fun, and funny.
I should probably own a piece of Runt art and it’s VERY easy to get one. Go to the Flying Pony before the end of the month. A pretty big one can be yours for $260, tax included, but for only $26 you can get a small, distinctive original right off the wall, cash and carry.
