Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel

Samuel Johnson’s famous quotation continues to ring true. I shudder with revulsion when the word “patriotism” is in Rob Ford’s mouth. Same goes for Tim Horton’s “patriotic” advertising, hiding their so-so products behind a screen of sentimental Canadiana.
Are we really as gullible as the scoundrels believe?

  1. I agree about the Ford brothers but I think Tim’s approach is just smart marketing. Let’s not forget that Tim was one hell of a hockey player.

  2. If people fall for Tim’s hokey sentimentality, I guess it is smart marketing. It makes me want to gag.
At this very moment, McDonald’s is running competitive commercials, touting their coffee. The message is all about the product and how good it tastes.
I’m rooting for McDonald’s sales in this round … and I think they will do better than Tim Horton.
PS. I knew that Tim Horton was a hockey player, but had no idea whether or not he played well. (Not that it would affect the quality of the fast food products.)
