Are passwords passé?


It looks like the convenience of simple, cookie-stored passwords will soon go away. There are just too many ways to crack them, faster and cheaper than ever.

  1. Server side encryption can still be set up correctly, so access is only given to the correct client.
    Very dramatic at the beginning of interview, but he peters out toward the end.

  2. I think you’re right, Joni… IF servers are set up correctly… but a lot are not. Credit card numbers are a particularly juicy target and every retail outlet transmits usernames and PINs. That’s a lot of weak spots.
    I wish we could get accurate data on how many times passwords are compromised, but nobody wants to admit it when their systems fail.
