Paul Royko would have been 64 today

I call this little clip “Paul’s snark”. Paul was 51 years old and he was helping me test my video camera by sending a jibe to his brother-in-law Charlie. Royko actually liked Charlie a lot, although you can’t really tell that from the clip.

Paul was my business partner for a brief 3 years when we worked together as a creative team in our little advertising company, Old Dogs New Tricks. Before that, we had worked as a team at the Vickers & Benson ad agency.

A man of many talents, Royko mastered every subject he took an interest in. As a craftsman, he was a perfectionist. Woodworking and cooking were his main things but he also became very good at bonsai and had done some fine stained glass before I met him. The phrase Renaissance man was made for him.

When he died, not long after surgery for esophageal cancer, his funeral was attended by hundreds of friends. Standing room only. I’ve never seen anything like it.

A dozen years have passed since Paul left us and he is still remembered fondly and sadly missed. Reminders are all over my house, from the elaborate wooden plaque he gave me on my 50th birthday to the lumber in the back porch that he trucked over for me.
