Thousands rally against Harper prorogation

That went well, I think. Chants against the shutdown of Parliament rang out loudly at Dundas Square today. The huge crowd grew so large that police had to close Yonge Street to traffic. Marchers called for politicians to Get Back to Work and for defeat of Harper’s government.

The crowd ranged in age from young to old. Some signs expressed the opinion that Harper was trying to avoid answering questions about torture in Afghanistan. Others denounced the politicians’ “paid vacations” at taxpayer expense.

The Toronto rally was only one of 60 held across Canada and even overseas. An even larger gathering happened on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

We marched down Yonge to Bay. The parade continued up Bay to College and back around to Yonge, but Donna and I had made our point and broke away to visit a quirky art gallery.

More about the art gallery later. One last shot of the Yonge Street crowd, looking north, this time.

I’m glad I decided to join this protest. There were tons of decent, everyday people of all ages… plus a few flakes promoting their wingy causes. I heard Harper’s spin doctors on the radio calling this nation-wide protest ‘just a blip’. Hope not, didn’t feel like a blip to me.
